Tuvalu slowly disappears...
According to the editors of the stamp magazine, ‘Der Briefmarken-Spiegel’, the philatelic world will soon lose an area. As a first group of islands world-wide, Tuvalu might become the victim of the slowly rising water level in the Pacific. The 11.000 inhabitants of Tuvalu were given the advice that they’d better move, e.g. to New Zealand.
With its 26 km², Tuvalu is one of the four smallest UN member states. As the area became independent in 1976, the stamps used uptil then, which carried the title Gilbert&Ellice Islands, got an imprint. In 1978, Tuvalu became a parliamentary monarchy and the islands launched a stream of new releases. Tuvalu’s most important export products are (or should we say ‘were’ ?) copra, fish and… stamps.
