The Presidentials.
A hot modern topic, raised over 50 years ago.
The issue policy of the post services is an emotronally charged subject. That it is not a new phenomenon is clearly proven by the fact that the largest series of long-term series issued within one year, dates back to 1938.
The largest series of long-term stamps issued within one year are the 1938 presidentials issued by the US. The 32 stamps appeared between April 25 and December 8 of that year, with a nominal value varying between 0.5 cent and 5 dollar.
The values of 1 to 22 c show the presidents of the US in chronological order. That was meant as a way to teach American post users some national history.
It was, however, a heavy attack on the purse, 12 USD spent on issues in half a year was quite an amount of money in 1938.
The term « presidentials » is not entirely correct. The 4.5 c stamp does not depict a president, but the White House.
