Photographer 'Karsh Issue' deceased
On Saturday 13th of July, the Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh, who, amongst others, owes his fame to his picture of Winston Churchill, pulling somewhat grumpily at his cigar.
That picture is probably the most famous one Karsh ever made ( although his portrays of Einstein, De Gaulle and Hemingway are extraordinary too), but philatelists know the Canadian best because of a series Canada issued in 1952 and 1953. That's why collectors tend to call this issue the Karsh Issue, which is a long-term series with the portray of a young Queen Elisabeth II, looking a little mysteriously into the master's lens. Furthermore, Karsh recently made the picture for an issue with portrays of the queen: his picture made it to the 45 cent stamp which, together with four other stamps, celebrated the Queen's 75ct birthday.
